Australian Open: Roger Federer Outlasts Tennys Sandgren To Face Novak Djokovic In Semi-final

Roger Federer made it past Tennys Sandgren in a hard-fought quarter-final that saw him drop two sets before coming out as the winner for a place in the semi-final in a quest for his 21st Grand Slam title and his first in Melbourne Park since 2018.

The unseeded opponent, 28, could not deny the six-time champion a place in the last four despite claiming two sets but was yet eliminated as the Swede rallied and saved seven match points to emerge as the winner in a five-setter, 6-3 2-6 2-6 7-6(8) 6-3.

Tenny was near getting the victory in the fourth set but was denied three match points by Federer at 4/5 and forced him to a tiebreak. The American yet claimed an early break and was a match point away from victory at 3/6 before the Swede broke back winning three straight points en route claiming the set.

Having to save seven match points to beat the American is just what Federer could not deny admitting was just a game of being "lucky" and that saved him from being stunned by Tennys.

"You've got to get lucky sometimes," he said. " Sometimes you're not under control. I just hoped he wouldn't smash a winner, just keep the ball in play and if he does miss one of two then see what is going through his mind."

The American did not stand much chance with Federer in the decider as he eased through the set taking an early break for 5/2 lead whilst Tennys was struggling with his shots. Federer sealed a worthy victory on Tennys netting his serve.

Federer will face in the last four, the defending champion Novak Djokovic who outclassed Milos Raonic in three sets, 6-4 6-3 7-6(1).
