Lionel Messi Pledges To Stay On At Barcelona
Lionel Messi is now the all-time biggest winner of Ballon d'Or which comes two months after he won Fifa best men's player, but for the forward, it is not time yet to wave goodbye to Barcelona.
The Argentine was voted the winner of the prestigious prize, edging out Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo who was absent at the ceremony.
In his acceptance speech, Messi admitted everything seemed to have happened "quickly" for him and would not have dreamed of being the prize biggest winner the year he won his first in Paris.
"I never stopped dreaming and enjoying football like when I was a child. I hope I have more years to enjoy," he said. "Although I am aware of how old I am, everything happens very quickly and I know that the of retirement (withdrawal) is approaching."
The 32-year-old has until 2020 in his current contract with Barcelona with an option for a year extension. Nonetheless, it does not seem like he would be leaving as he pledged his commitment to the club in his speech.
He teased his interest to stay on at Nou Camp by saying, "What I feel for this club goes beyond any signature, any contract or any piece of paper."
Messi is a product of the club from its academy and has enjoyed winning multiple silverware with the team in his 15 years reign at the club.
