Spain's David Villa Retires From Football

Spain international David Villa has confirmed his desire to retire from football by next month which is when the Japanese league season where he currently plays will end.

The announcement comes the day after the Barcelona striker revealed his new status as an investor in a New York-based FC, Queensboro - a franchise that plays in the second tier of the US soccer league.

"I wanted to retire from football, not by force to retire," he announced on Wednesday. "I will continue to be involved in football in other ways and will continue to contribute to the football world."

David, 31, who currently plays with Vissel Kobe in Japan, won the 2008 European Championship and 2010 Fifa World Cup with Spain and is the country's highest goalscorer of all-time.

During his spell at Barcelona, he won eight silverware with the team and scored 48 goals in 119 appearances in all competitions. He left there to join Atletico Madrid for a season and won the La Liga with the team in 2013-14.
