Premier League: Tottenham Snap Winless On Jose Mourinho's Debut
Tottenham have opened a new chapter with their first league game win after five winless runs on Jose Mourinho's debut with a 3-2 away win over West Ham.
Mauricio Pochettino's reign at Spurs saw a shocking end on Tuesday when he was fired and was replaced by the Portuguese who had been redundant for eleven months after he dismissed at Manchester United in December 2018.
From 14th position, Spurs got catapulted to the sixth position having earned maximum points from the victory, scoring twice in the first half and struck in the winning in the second half. Meanwhile, Hammer pulled two goals back late into the game with Italy international Angelo Ogbonna scoring last consolation goal late in the injury-time.
The South Korean striker worked his way through before smacking in an opener followed and his cross into the box resulted in the second goal with Lucas Moura poking in the ball in 43rd minutes.
Mind you, the goal tally could have been wider for Spurs in the first half as they could not convert some close chances and Harry Kane first attempt at the target was ruled out for an offside position but the England striker scored the third goal heading in Serge Aurier in the second half.
Michail Antonio made a brilliant finish of Declan Rice's pass in the box and slid to smack the past Spurs' defenders and beat Paulo Gazzaniga to the goal. With just a minute left to play in the injury time, Spurs were off for the victory already but Ogbonna scored a consolating second for Hammer anyway.
Spurs' position in the table is yet provisional as Arsenal and Manchester United winning their game would send the club down the table. However, it was a game that Mourinho admitted he really "happy" about at least for an hour.
"I was really happy for an hour," said Mourinho. "I think we are lucky that I have so many years of Premier League that I told the players at half-time, even if it is 3-0, minute 85 the game will be open, and I think they understood that."
