Nitto ATP Finals: Stefanos Tsitsipas Beats Dominic Thiem To Become First Greek To Lift Trophy

Stefanos Tsitsipas earned a remarkable victory over Dominic Thiem to become the Nitto ATP Finals champion on his debut appearance in the final of the season-ending event and emerged as the youngest player ever to lift the prestigious trophy in 18 years.

At the fully-packed O2 Arena in London where the championship was hosted, Tsitsipas, who is the first Greek player to be champion, delivered a stunning performance and recovered from a set down to Dominic to clinch the victory in three sets, 6-7(8), 6-2, 7-6(4).

"It's been a roller coaster," said the 21-year-old on winning the biggest of his career. "Holding this trophy is amazing. It is a dream come true and the best way to end this match."

During the match that lasted two hours and 35 minutes, Tsitsipas forced a tiebreak in the decider and claimed an earlier break for 4-1 lead but Dominic rallied back and leveled 4-4 but conceded straight three championship points to the Greek player, who dropped to the floor with his face down when the Austrian hit a forehand return wide on his serve.

En route his victory, Dominic had shown some sort of emotional distress when he was just a match point away from lifting the trophy that Alexander Zverev lifted last year and dethroned the German to be the new youngest champion in recent time.

He added, "I did get nervous at some points in the match but managed to forget about how I felt and I had momentum in the tie-break, which was really tight."

Stefanos reached the final as the first Greek to do so by defeating the six-time champion, Roger Federer, in the semi-finals in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Prior to that, Dominic Thiem had stunned the Swiss player in the opening match of the group stage beating him in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5.
