Nitto ATP Finals: Matteo Berretini Beats Dominic Thiem, Fails To Qualify For Semi-final
Matteo Berrettini won his first-ever match the championship with straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-3 win over Dominic Thiem to become the first Italian player ever to win a match in the season-ending tournament.
Berrettini improved 1-2 in Group Bjorn Borg and is technically not progressing to the semi-finals after losing two previous matches to Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Nonetheless, beating the Austrian to make history at the tournament made his appearance worth it.
"I'm really proud of myself, but more for the team, my family, my friends," said the Italian player. "I was able to stay mentally focused, especially in the first set. I played a great tie-break, so I'm very happy with my performance."
However, Dominic is through to the semi-final having improved 2-1 in Group Andrea Agassi for winning two previous matches against Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
