Nitto ATP Finals: Dominic Thiem Takes Out Roger Federer

Shocking as it may sound but not the first time this season. Dominic Thiem stunned Roger Federer in the opening round, outlasting the third-seeded player in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5.

It was an unusual unimpressive outing from the six-time champion against the fifth-seeded player who saved three out of four break point advantages faced against the Swiss en-route the victory which he wrapped up with a serve Federer netted on backhand return.

Dominic has now in three consecutive meetings this season defeated Federer - Indian Well Masters and Madrid Open - and extended his lead to 5-in-7 in ATP FedEx head-to-head series.

"I think we had a good and close match and of course, it's always something special to beat Roger as he is an absolute legend. I love to play against him and learn a lot," Dominic said.

The 26-year-old proved to be the better player as he had an early break for a 2-0 lead in the opener before Federer broke back and take the lead but Dominic claimed a breakpoint to take 6-5 and won the set with a blistering forehand.

He added, "It's amazing to play against probably the best player of all time, to play against a real legend like that. But, yeah, luckily I have a pretty good record against him and I try to play positive against him all the time."

Federer will play against Matteo Berrettini who lost in the opening match to Novak Djokovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 whilst Dominic Thiem will face Djokovic in the next match.
