Deontay Wilder Retains WBC Title, Knocks Out Luis Ortiz In Rematch
Deontay Wilder has made a big statement in boxing by the way he crushed Luiz Ortiz in rematch bout on Saturday night to retain his heavyweight title.
Unlike his bout against British boxer Tyson Fury, Wilder did not give Ortiz the privilege of fighting through the rounds which could have been disappointing for him as he trailed in points but ended the fight against the 40-year-old in a stunning seven-round knockout.
Ortiz was caught unguarded and got punished by Wilder who landed a terrible right-hand punch on his head and went down crashing on the rings. He could not recover so soon as the referee counts and called off the fight.
Speaking on the fight-ending shot that devastated Ortiz and rendered him hopeless on the floor, he said: "I found my measurement, seen the shot and took it."
The victory set Wilder up for his anticipated fight with Anthony Joshua who in two weeks will be facing the heavyweight champion, Andy Ruiz Jr., in a rematch to reclaim the heavyweight belts - IBF, WBA, and WBO - he lost to the American-Mexican in June at the Madison Square, New York.
However, the American has a rematch with Tyson Fury set for February before he would take on Joshua whose boxing career is facing a terrible challenge from Ruiz.
He added, "We have Tyson Fury the rematch next. It's set to be done in February so we will see how that goes and then after that I am looking for a unification bout. The heavyweight division is too small to have so many belts lingering around, there should be one champion."
