Champions League: Liverpool Beat KRC Genk To Stay Atop Group E

Liverpool remain in the top spot of Group E with 2-1 win over KRC Genk but did without regular first-team players like Saduo Mane and Roberto Firmino ahead of the Sunday derby clash against Manchester City.

The title-holders are only facing serious contests from Napoli who trailed by a point and aside from that, they are on the way to the knockout stages with two group matches remaining.

It was such a game that Reds had in their control - they have not lost at home in 24 consecutive games - and had Genks punished for a defensive error committed by captain Sebastian Dewaest and Georginio Wijnaldum smacked it into the net for the opening goal.

Genk leveled the scoring from Mbwana Samatta's header with just five minutes left in the first half but that did not last long as Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain skillfully struck a low-cut shot home to give Liverpool the winning goal soon after that break.

Reds almost allowed the victory slid off them as the Belgians' striker Bryan Heynen was left unmarked and defender de Norre found him with a cross which he attempted with a right-footed shot from inside the box only Alisson to parry into safety.

"We had a lot of shots and some really big chances that we usually use," Jurgen Klopp told BT Sport. "If we had scored two or three goals in the first half, nobody would have thought that couldn't have happened. But we went 1-1 and then it got tricky."

Ahead of Sunday match against Manchester City, Pep Guardiola has accused Liverpool players especially Sadio Mane of diving to earn penalties and Klopp has dismissed the accusation. City narrowly edged Reds out by a point to win the Premier League title last season. They completed the season with a domestic treble - first time for an English club to win the league including FA and EFL Carabao Cup in a single season.
