World Athletics Championships: Dina Asher-Smith Becomes 200M World Champion

Dina Asher-Smith has won the 200m gold medal to become the first British female athlete to hold a major sprint title at global level.

In the final, Smith, who was standing in lane 7, quickly picked up on her pace at the blast of the whistle and raced on ahead holding down the lead as she brilliantly made the turn and paced on to finish first in 21.88 seconds for a gold medal.

The 23-year-old was the favourite at the category and finished at a time that is a new British record for 200m. She won the silver medal in the 100m after being outclassed by Jamaican favourite Shelly-Ann Frazer-Pryce who won the gold medal.

Emotionally Dina held back tears as she speaks to BBC Sport on her historic victory in Doha and could not believe she has just emerged as the champion. She said, "I'm lost for words...I don't think it's properly sunk in."

Just as expected of Greater London born sprinter, she delivered an outstanding pace amongst her contender and on coming out of the bend she had gained favourable gap. She held that advantage pacing on ahead of Britanny Brown (USA).

Brittany won the silver medal 22.21 seconds and Mujinga Kambundji of Switzerland finished in 22.51 seconds to claim the bronze medal.
