Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori Make Gareth Southgate's Squad For Euro 2020 Qualifiers
Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori have chosen to commit their international football career to England and the national team manager Gareth Southgate has enlisted the duo for the country's Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.
Now that both players have accepted the international call up from the Three Lions manager for a professional match at senior level, they can no longer play for their native country, Nigeria, who has been strongly hoped they would prefer playing for the Super Eagles to England.
Southgate described the outcome of the list for the qualifiers as on that has been "difficult decisions to make" but remained confident in the list because those called up are "very much in form."
"He [Tammy] and Fikayo are both in on merit and have been part of our junior system right the way through," Southgate said. "So we see them as English players and they have a huge desire to play for England at senior level."
Explaining how he finalized on the list, Southgate mentioned that he omitted Dele Alli, Jesse Lingard, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain based on consideration of their performance at club level especially judging by goals and assists made since the season started.
"As an attacking midfielder, you are going to be judged on your goals and assists. The competition is a lot higher than it was 18 months ago...All those players will recognise why I've made these decisions," he said.
Tammy is currently the highest scoring English player in the Premier with seven goals scored since the start of the season and has capped twice for the country in friendlies against Brazil and Germany. He scored his first continental goal in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Lillie in the Champions League group stage match on Wednesday.
Also, Fikayo has capped 15 times for England Under 21 and was also linked to a call up from Nigeria but did not make his decision known until now that he has chosen to continue with England at senior level.
