Swiss Indoors (Basel): Stan Wawrinka Retires Over Back Injury

The quarter-final match between Roger Federer and his compatriots StanWawrinka could not hold because the seventh seed withdrew over back injury.

It could have been Wawrinka's 27th ATP FedEx head-to-head series against his countryman, Federer, who is on his campaign for a record tenth title in his hometown. He now has progressed to the semi-final.

Announcing his withdrawal from the match, Stan pointed out that there is a need for him to listen to his body and pull out. However, he described his decision as a huge "disappointment and sad" for him to make, being that he is playing in a tournament in his home country.

The 34-year-old finished as the European Open runner-up having lost to former world no. 1 Andy Murray - who was making a comeback from hip resurfacing injury - in straight sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

However, Stan won his opening match against Uruguayan player Pablo Cuevas and booked his place in the quarter-final, which he retired from, outclassing American player Frances Tiafoe in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
