Shanghai Masters: Fabio Fognini Knocks Out Andy Murray In Heated Second Round

After an impressive comeback in Beijing at China Open, Andy Murray's appearance in this week's Shanghai Masters happened to be brief following a second-round exit in a defeat to Fabio Fognini.

Murray battled through a tough match against the Frenchman but conceded in three sets, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-7(2) at the tournament he last played in 2016.

The three-time champion rallied from a set down to push the match into a decider and forced a tiebreak that was dominated by Fabio who claimed a match point with the Briton hitting wide a backhand.

"I've never had that in a match and I've played 800-odd matches on the tour," Murray recalled having an on-court row with Fabio midway the match.

Narrating what caused the outburst of rage, Murray explained that he was distracted by the noise coming from the audience and his opponent thought he was looking at him when he looked in the direction where that was coming from.

"It's against the rules, it's hindrance, you shouldn't do it," he added. "But he said I should have a sense of humor about that but in that moment neither of us were in a joking, laughing kind of mood."

Murray is making a comeback from hip resurfacing surgery and is farther reach in six tournaments played thus far was in China Open where he reached the quarter-finals only to be beaten by Dominic Thiem.
