Rory McIlroy To Participate In Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Chooses To Represent Ireland

Rory Mcllroy has joined the list of competitors for an Olympic medal in golf as he confirmed that he will be participating at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and will be representing Ireland.

The former world no. 1 waived participating in the 2016 Rio Olympics of the fear of contrasting the Zika virus - a disease spread by mosquitos that cause carriers' babies to be born with half the size of the normal brain - which was prevalent in Brazil at the time.

Expressing his delight at playing at the Games, the four-time Major Championship winner told Golf Channel, "I'm excited to play and call myself an Olympian."

In terms of his choice to play for Ireland, the 2011 US Open Champion admitted that a tough decision for him but made up his mind to represent the country he has always been known for at the Olympics.

"My feelings towards it were more about what other people will think," he said. "The decision was that I was going to play for the country or nation that I've always played golf for, through my junior and amateur days, and now into my professional career."
