Roger Federer Confirms Interest In Competing At Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games
Roger Federer has not given up on his desire to have more Olympic medals and confirmed he will be competing at the 2020 Olympics Games in Tokyo, Japan.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion was denied winning his second Masters 1000 title of the season in Shanghai Open by Alexander Zverev which could have extended his career tally to 29. Nonetheless, he has a total of 102 ATP singles titles in his record but is yet to win an Olympic gold medal in men's singles.
"I've been debating with my team for a few weeks now or a month, what I should do in the summertime after Wimbledon in terms of also before the US Open," said the Swiss at an exhibition match against John Isner in Tokyo on Monday.
Federer won his first Olympic men's singles medal in London 2012 where he was defeated in the final by former world no. 1 Andy Murray in three sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 to receive a silver medal. The 38-year-old may not have a gold medal in men's singles in the Games but is an Olympic gold medallist in men's doubles with Stan Wawrinka.
He added, "At the end of the day, my heart decided I would love to play the Olympic Games again. I carried the flag twice for Switzerland in Athen and Beijing as well."
However, it does not seem as the world no. 3 will be alone at the Games as he might have to compete for the top prize with Novak Djokovic, who has been speculated to be competing at the Games. Just like the Swiss, the world no. 1 is another tennis top player who is yet to win an Olympic gold medal.
