Premier League: Marcos Alonso Gets Chelsea Through Against Newcastle United

Chelsea was faced with huge resistance from Newcastle United but a late effort from Marcos Alonso delivered the well-deserved winning goal that sealed a 1-0 home victory for the side.

Frank Lampard's men stretched their win streak to five consecutive games in all competitions and tie on points with Leicester City to fourth on the table behind the 2016-17 champions.

Tammy Abraham could have punished Martin Dubravka for poor clearance before his header clipped the cross bar. Newcastle maintained resilience through first half even when Christian Pulisic cam close to getting opener Dubravka denied him.

Chelsea had the upper hand in the first half considering possessions but were held off by Magpies until after the break when Alonso smacked home the winning goal from inside the box from Callum Hudson-Odoi's pass in 73rd minutes.

"We were upbeat, we had urgency, the tempo was good, and that got us the win. We want to score goals," Lampard said afterward. "If we want to keep moving up, we can do better. So far this season, through, things are going well."

Abraham could have doubled the lead for Chelsea but DeAndre Yedlin stopped his shot. Nevertheless, Chelsea passed the home test with their manager, Lampard.
