Premier League: Leicester Blowout Of Southampton Equals 24-Year-Old Record For Biggest Defeat

Southampton suffered worst their history as they got thrashed at home by Leicester City, who claimed a massive 9-0 win to move up to second place in the league table.

James Vardy and Ayose Perez scored a hat-trick in the humiliating match that saw Leicester equaling the previous record set for the biggest defeat in the Premier League since Manchester United defeated Ipswich by 9-0 in 1995.

Aside from the goal margin, Leicester did not just dominate the game but had huge 25 shots at the target as against Saints, who had just three and remained in the relegation zone following the defeat.

"We were very hungry tonight," says Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers. "It was horrible weather but our focus was outstanding. I'm very pleased how we defended, and we were ruthless."

James Maddison scores the fifth goal against Southampton with a brilliant finish from a free-kick

10-man Saints could not stop their hosts from raining down goals on them before and after Ryan Bertrand was red-carded early into the match. Meanwhile, Ben Chilwell had put Leicester in the lead before Bertrand

Just in a space of two minutes, Youri Tielemans and Ayose Perez drilled in the second and third goals. At this time, Saints' defense had become very porous for the hosts. Ayose had completed his hat-trick before Vardy did by converting a penalty late in injury time. James Maddison had sandwiched the fifth goal from a free-kick before completed his hat-trick.

In praise of the team's performance, Rodgers added, "A mark of the good sides is you don't let up. We wanted to show we're a good side and we certainly did that in the second half."
