Mexico Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton Wins But Will Wait Until Next Race To Be Champion
Lewis Hamilton secured his 10th race victory of the season in Mexico Grand Prix but will not be awarded his sixth Championship title despite the win because his teammate, Valterri Bottas finished third. That pushed his championship title until the next race.
Despite starting in the third position behind Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc in second and pole position respectively, the Briton delivered a stunning performance to finish fastest in 1:36:48.904 seconds.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen was meant to start in pole position but was dropped to the fourth position following a three-place penalty he was served for a yellow flag infringement. As a result, Ferrari's Leclerc was promoted to pole position. Unfortunately, his choice of tyres was his predicament and finished fourth behind Sebastian Vettel, who finished third.
Unlike other contenders, Hamilton drove on the same tyres for 48 out of 71 laps to gain tremendous pace advantage over his arch-rivals, the Ferrari duos. Aside from that, the pitting method adopted by the Mercedes team was another factor that gave him the edge.
"First we have to applaud this incredible crowd. This is the best crowd I think I have ever seen," Hamilton said. "We came here thinking we were on the back foot. I had quite a bit of damage on my car, the race was a struggle. I am so grateful."
Now, clinching the sixth title will not require much hard work in the next race as he only needs to finish at least eighth in the United States Grand Prix next weekend. Lifting the Championship title for the sixth will move him just a title closer to tying up with Michael Schumacher on record set for biggest winner of all-time with seven Championship titles.
