European Open: Andy Murray Beats Stan Wawrinka To Win First ATP Title In Two Years
Andy Murray has ended the title-drough that has lasted through two years with his first in European Open by beating Stan Wawrinka in the final match in Antwerp, Austria.
The former world no. 1, who was making debut appearance at the tournament, won the title in first ATP final appearance in two years after a comeback from hip resurfacing surface that plummeted his ATP rankings.
Murray took down Wawrinka in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and became the second British player to lift the trophy after Kyle Edmund who defeated France's Gael Monfils to win the title in 2018.
The Briton fought back from a set down and even when the Swiss took an early break in the second set for a 3-1 lead, he broke back and level up and went on to win match to clinch the title.
"To see you back at this level, it's amazing," said Wawrinka, who was also aiming for his first title at the even, congratulated Murray. "We're all really happy. I'm sad I lost today.
