Europa League: Gabriel Martinelli Inspires Arsenal For Big Win Over Standard Liege

Gabriel Martinelli may be a teenager but he led Arsenal to get Standard Liege dealt with in a 4-0 home victory in the second group stage match of the Europa League.

Signed for £6million, the Brazilian had the Belgians trailing by two goals after scoring a brace early into the match before Joe Willock added in the third to keep Arsenal in a comfortable lead through the first half.

Martinelli showed the class of player he is made up by the way he headed in Keiran Tierney's cross to give Arsenal the lead in 13th minutes, and two minutes later, brilliantly finished a pass from Nelson from inside the area to double the lead.

Nelson inspired the third goal after his shot at the target from outside the box was blocked to Willock reach to latch into the net for the third goal in 22nd minutes.

By now, a fought back does not seem as what the Belgians can stage and Arsenal would make it a fourth goal and this time inspired by the 18-year-old Martinelli who crossed the ball in for Dani Ceballos to simply leap and poke in.

Delighted Arsenal manager Unai Emery described the victory as "fantastic" for having to claim maximum points from two matches to keep the side on top of their group.

"To have siz points after the two matches, it's really important," Emery said. "We did a lot of good, we can analyse to continues to improve. It's a fantastic victory."

The three goals from Arsenal was their first in first 22 minutes of a European match since 2008 against Fenerbahce despite Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe coming in as subs.
