Chicago Marathon: Brigid Kosgei Upsets 16 Years World Record Set By Paula Radcliffe
Kenyan athletic ace, Brigid Kosgei, has broken marathon standing record of 16 years set by Paula Radcliffe which she beat by finishing 81 seconds earlier at the Chicago Marathon on Sunday.
Radcliffe set the previous record for 2:15:25 seconds in 2003 but that began to suffer a potential defeat as the Kenyan got closer with 5 km left to reach the finish line. She raced through the last stretch of the race and touched on the cross line in 2:14: 04 seconds.
"I am feeling good," she said with delight afterward. "I am happy because I was not expecting this. But I felt my body was moving, moving, moving so I went for it."
Beside winning at the event, the 25-year-old is also the London marathon defending champion which she won as the youngest champion in 2:18:20 seconds.
In addition, she also won this year's Great North Run in 1:04:28 seconds. In the second position behind the Kenyan was Ababel Yeshaneh from Ethiopia who finished six minutes 47 seconds later.
