US Open: Rafael Nadal Digs Deep To Beat Diego Schwartzman
Rafael Nadal dug deep to knock Diego Schwartzman out in three sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 and set up a semi-final match against Matteo Berrettini.
The 2nd seed survived a stunning comeback in the second set from the Argentine, who pushed back on his early break and rose up to 6-5 but failed to forced a tiebreak as he conceded a break point to lose the set.
Diego earned praise from the world no. 2 who described him as one who is "able to win against everybod" when he's playing at his best. Nadal also admitted the match was tough and glad to have won.
"Diego is playing unbelievable. I need to play my best in the next round to have the chance to be in the semi-finals," he said afterwards. He claimed 8-in-14 break point advantage to beat the Argentine for his eighth unbeaten runs in ATP FedEx head-to-head count.
Being a strong serving player, Nadal used his heavy forehand groundstrokes to keep the 27-year-old on the baseline and leave no chance for a rally to secure the victory in the third set.
Diego in return praised the Spaniard describing him as "a lion in the jungle and fighter". In addition he said, "He know how to play important moments every single time."
With Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic already out, the three-time champion stands not much threat from any arch-rivals en route winning his fourth US Open title only that he has Italian player Matteo Berrettini to pass to reach the final.
