US Open: Matteo Berrettini Beats Gael Monfils To Reach Semi-finals

It has been an interesting run for Gael Monfils at the US Open, unfortunately, he could not make it to the semi-final for a Wakanda hand celebration like he did in the previous round sign after his defeat to Matteo Berrettini.

The Italian started off slow but would build up resilience for a stunning victory over the Frenchman in five-set 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(5)  to become the second Italian player ever to make it through to the US Open semi-finals.

In the showdown that lasted for nearly fourth hours, Monfils rallies from two sets down and claimed an early break by 3/1 in the fourth forcing the match into a decider and at the tiebreak the 13th seed's knew his fate.

The Frenchman was on a rally after Matteo had taking an early break by 5/2 at the tiebreak in the decider, and conceded two match points gifting the more aggressive Italian the victory.

When asked what it takes for him to make it through to play in his first major semifinals of his career, he told the ESPN, "Right know, I don't remember any points [but] Just the match points."

"I was a little tired but you didn't see I guess. I am proud of myself. Lost my serve twice in the fifth set. I was 5-2 and serving in the tie but I was focusing on the next point. That was a great job for me and for my family. Thank you."

Matteo will meet in the next match two-time champion Rafel Nadal, who thrashed Argentine opponent Diego Schwartzman in three sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2.
