Singapore Grand Prix: Sebastian Vettel Wins In Ferrari One-Two Finish, Hamilton Takes Fourth
Sebastian Vettel has won his first race of the season in Scuderia Ferrari's first-ever 1-2 victory in the history of Singapore Grand Prix while Mercedes duo, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, missed podium position to finish in fourth and fifth place respectively.
Charles Leclerc could not complete a hat-trick Marina Bay after winning two previous race as he was faced with strong contention from Sebastian who took the lead from lap 31 after overtaking Gasly and Giovianazzi from third to be in provisional first.
The German held on to the position through to the end, keeping the Monegasque to trail in the second position and finished the race in 1:58:33.667 seconds for a 2-1 victory. And in the third position was Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Hamilton in the fourth place.
"Obviously, it is always difficult to lose a win like that," said Leclerc who was bidding for his third successive race victory. "At the end, It's a one-two for the team. So I'm happy for that, our first of the season."
After Leclerc and Verstappen had overtaken Gasly and Giovianazzi to move up in Lap 33, both drivers retained their spot through to the finish line. Hamilton also gained pace to pass both Gasly and Giovianazzi to come up to the fourth place and his teammate Bottas later followed to take the fifth position.
Speaking after the race, Verstappen believed he could have done much better if not for issues he had with his tyres from the start and had to call for safety tyres.
"The whole race went well. At the beginning, it was really slow and everyone was close together then I started to struggle with the tyres," the Dutch driver recalled. "We undercut Lewis and from there it was about managing the tyres."
Hamilton is yet to break the drought in three races ever since he won Hungarian GP. However, he remains the leading driver in title race standing with 296 points, followed by Bottas (231). Leclerc and Verstappen take the third and fourth places respectively, tying point by 200 points.
