Russian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton Breaks Winning Drought In Sochi For Mercedes First Victory In Four Races
Lewis Hamilton has ended his race losing streak that has lasted through three Grand Prix and claimed his first in a one-two Mercedes victory in Sochi - A fortress that Ferrari is yet unable to surmount since 2001 when Michael Schumacher last won it for the German race team.
Since Hungary GP, Ferrari has been the dominating team in both qualifying sessions and in the final races, winning all previous three with Charles Leclerc clinching pole back-to-back and claiming two races in a row for the first time in his career.
Unfortunately, Sebastian Vettel forfeited the team's chances in Sochi for a breakdown of understanding between him and the team constructors, which needed him to allow Charles Leclerc to back pass as they have intended to keep Hamilton in the trail.
That instructions neither the team plan were any longer unacceptable to Vettel and that later gave Hamilton the chance to overtake Leclerc for the second position after the Monegasque had pitted on lap 22. Just when Ferrari hope Leclerc would fight from the fourth position, Vettel pitted and suffered engine problem that pulled him out of the race and now Hamilton is comfortable in the lead.
Leclerc, who started in pole, later lost his position to Valtteri Bottas when he pitted on lap 31and the Mercedes duo controlled the race through to finish line with Hamilton leading to clinch victory leading his Finn teammate by as much as 3.8 seconds.
"I will always trust the team but the tactic was me giving the slipstream to be one-two at the end of the straight," said Leclerc explaining how the intended to follow the team's game plan. "Then I don't know...I need to speak with the team to know better the situation."
An ecstatic Hamilton simply leaped into the air in joy after coming out of his car. He replied a question asked him about the race saying, "Firstly, an incredible job by all of the guys this weekend, never giving up. We keep pushing."
Apparently, the Briton is coasting to yet another championship title this season as he now leads with 322 points followed by Bottas with 249 points and in the third place is Leclerc with 212 points.
