Jurgen Klopp Chooses Steve Gerrard As Potential Successor
Jurgen Klopp has been enjoying a spell decorated with trophies at Liverpool since last season, but while the good times last, he has an opinion on who he deemed fit as his successor should he has to leave the club someday.
Klopp was voted as this years Fifa best men's coach award winner for the first time in his career. He contended with two Premier League arch rivals, Mauricio Pocchettino (Tottenham) and Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) to win the award on Monday.
In an interview with John Bishop for FourFourTwo magazine new edition cover, the 52-year-old opened his mind on his choice replacement should the club management wants him to leave in the future.
In the German's opinion, Kenny Miller and Steve Gerrard of Rangers, are perfect choice to succeed him someday, but has a strong feelings for the club's former player as a much better replacement when the time comes.
"My position as a manager has nothing to do with the people around me. If Liverpool were to sack me tomorrow, the Kenny would be the first choice to replace me," Klopp told Bishop.
"But they would probably bring Stevie down from Glasgow. If you ask who should follow me, I'd say Stevie. I help him whenever I can."
Klopp won the Champions League with Liverpool last season and added the UEFA Super Cup to the list of silverware won with the team. His contract with the club runs until 2022 after extending his previous contract in 2016.
Explaining the reasons for choosing club's former central midfielder, he said: "I'm old enough to know that I give this job everything. I'm not a genius, I'm not perfect, but I give the club 100 per cent. If that's enough, great. If it's not, then it's just the problem of the situation."
