'Downton Abbey' Takes #1 Spot On Opening Weekend As 'Rambo: Last Blood' Peaks At #3

Not much has really changed for Sylvester Stallon's famous franchise 'Rambo' as the fifth instalment gulped just about what any of its predecessors would gross in an opening weekend at the box office.

Last Blood did not fall short of expectation with a domestic gross of $19million which is just about a million dollars lesser than what the fourth instalment 'Rambo' grossed eleven years ago.

The Lionsgate film is the second-highest debut for the franchise after 1985's Rambo: First Blood Part II which debuted the box grossing $20.17 million and closed at $150.4 million.

Fox's sci-fi film Ad Astra edged Last Blood by a whisker to take the second position in the chart with an opening gross of $19.21 million, screening from much wider locations (3,618) than Sylvester Stallon's film.

The performance recorded by the film that starred Brad Pitt in the lead role can not be said to be satisfying for the studios that reportedly spent between $80-100 million on production. Nevertheless, in the international, it hauled in $26million with the highest contributors being the United Kingdom and South Korea.

Talking about the chart-topper of the weekend, Downton Abbey, the Focus Features film notched in #1 position with a domestic gross of $31million, screening at 3,079 theatres.

Never before has any FF films notched the spot at the over $30m gross until Abbey's debut, which happened to be the studio's largest opening weekend and overthrowing the previous record set for the feat by its predecessors 2016's London Has Fallen ($21.6m) and The Insidious Chapter 3 ($22.7m).

The Michael Engler-directed film maintained its dominance In the international market, opening with a gross of $30.8 million with the largest contribution coming from the United Kingdom ($7.5m) followed by Australia ($2.21m)
