Champions League: Valencia Sink Chelsea In 1-0 Defeat On Frank Lampard's Debut
Chelsea failed to win their first Champions League match under Frank Lampard as Spanish La Liga side Napoli had them beaten at home by 1-0 with a superb finish from Rodrigo.
The English side had better chances than the Spaniards with Willian coming close to striking home an opening goal for the side two in the first half and a penalty missed by Ross Barkley could have levelled the scoring.
Napoli made away with the maximum points when a brilliant finish from Rodrigo, who slammed in a free-kick shot from Daniel Parego mid-way the second half.
Meanwhile, Willian had a few words with Barkley on taking the spot-kick by the English player kind off asked him to leave it to him. He did take a nice kick only that he sent the ball in flight just too high to have crashed into the cross-bar and bounced out of touch.
"Ross is a penalty taker and when he starts games. He took it and missed it," Lampard said afterwards in a dressing room reaction. "It is a great story to say there is contention between players. if he scores it is not a story. But he took it and missed. That is it."
The victory is Valencia's first in seven meetings and are second in Group H behind Ajax who defeated LOSC Lille by 3-0. Chelsea are third in the group and French side in the fourth position.
