Barcelona Teenage Striker Ansu Fati Switches Nationality To Spain

Guinea-Bissau-born striker Ansu Fati has switched nationality from his native country to Spain after securing country citizenship, which now allows him to play for the national team.

Ansu had not only the African country as an option he could have played for, Portugal reportedly was another option considering his grandparents who are Portuguese.

The 16-year-old made a debut appearance for Barcelona in 5-2 home victory against Valencia and was instrumental to the second goal scored by Frenkie de Jong, five minutes after he had scored the opening goal.

Switching nationality to Spain does not automatically give him a slot to appear in the senior team as he is expected to start with the Under-17, which means he can still change to either of the two previous options - Guinea-Bissau and Portugal - unless he chooses to remain.

Ansu is the youngest player in the history of Spanish La Liga to score and assist another player to score in a single league match. He also made a debut appearance in the Champions League in Barcelona's goalless away draw against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.
