US Open: Roger Federer Takes Out Damir Dzumhur, Advances To Third Round
Starting hasn't been the best of Roger Federer. Just as the opener, he recovered from a set down to thrash Bosnian player Damir Dzumhur to advance to the third round of the US Open.
Despite winning the opener, Damir could not match the tenacity of the five-time champion who served 16 aces en route that match to have him eliminated in four sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in a match that lasted for two hours and 21 minutes.
The Bosnian tried to put Federer to the test with his forehand groundstroke combined with slices and those could not pull a string off the wealth of experience the world no. 3 brought into the game. Nonetheless, winning the opener against Federer was his career's first set winning in three ATP FedEx meetings.
"He was my idol. He was a person out of the court and on the court, I was following," Damir admittedly said afterwards. "He was definitely, for me, the best player in tennis history."
Federer has not lifted the trophy here in eleven years and since he had rivals like Novak Djokovic to meet as he progresses, ending the drought will be a huge challenge to him unless he addresses his slow starting.
The former champion had a very tough final at the Wimbledon which he narrowly lost to Novak Djokovic in a remarkable comeback that starved the Swiss of a championship point to deny him the title.
As the campaign for his first title since 2008 continues, the 38-year-old set up third match against either Dan Evan or Frenchman Lucas Pouille.
