FA Community Shield: Manchester City Outlast Liverpool On Penalties To Lift Trophy
The fate of the game was decided when Gabriel Jesus converted his spot-kick after Georginio Wijnaldum had his kick saved by Claudio Bravo.
Both teams lived up to expectations in front of the crowded spectators with the opening goal coming from Raheem Sterling early into the game. The English midfielder tapped in a flick pass from David Silva in 12th minutes.
City had the best of the first half with Sterling repeatedly making attempted that if converted could have sealed the game for the side, but Liverpool came into the game fired up in the second half and levelled the score-line Joel Matip's header to Virgil van Dijk's cross from in the box.
Nevertheless, the match could have gone either way but Reds had much better chances especially the Virgil van Dijk's flick that VAR ruled not enough to be granted a goal.
Defensively, Raheem Sterling was able to penetrate into Reds' eighteen-yard box despite having Leroy Sane substitute early into the game and without Sergio Aguero.
In the end, it was a well-deserved victory for City which became the first team after Arsenal to win a Community Shield after winning Premier League and FA Cup in the previous season.
