Disney's 'The Lion King' Remake Surpasses $1 Billion Benchmark


Talking about billion-dollar films, you will have to mention The Lion King which crossed the benchmark in less than three weeks after its premiere.

The Disney film notched at the top spot at the box office with $191 million on opening weekend. It maintained the strong pull in the market through the second week yet atop for a domestic gross that now totaled at $376.2 million. 

Thus, bringing on the table its international cume, Jon Favreau-directed hyperrealistic remake comfortable settle in the billion-dollar status with a global gross of $1.014 billion (£821m). 

Within the period it has been screening at the cinemas, the Chinese market takes the lead as the biggest contributor overseas with $114.7 million and the United Kingdom leads in Europe with $45.9 million. In North America, Mexico has added a chunk of $37.1 million. 

Just before Lion King hit the cinema, Marvel Studios and Disney's film Avengers: Endgame had just knocked Avatar out of the No. 1 spot of biggest worldwide gross with $2.79 billion. The remake which had Beyonce voicing as Nala and Donald Glover as Simba will be Disney's fourth billion-dollar film ever. 

The Formation songstress did the soundtrack for the hyper live-action film and also accompanied the film premiere with an album release "The Lion King: The Gift" - based on the film storyline.
