Cincinnati Masters: Daniil Medvedev Upsets Novak Djokovic For Second Masters 1000 Final
Daniil Medvedev brought his brilliant to play against Novak Djokovic and had the top seed routed in the semi-final for his first-ever Western and Southern Open final match experience and his second in ATP Masters 1000.
The Russian player's used his ace serving brilliance and forehand groundstroke to bring the defending champion down in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 that lasted for one hour and 43 minutes.
"To be honest, I don't know how I did it," Medvedev admitted to the intensity of the match speaking to ESPN afterward. "I was so tired in the first set and playing Novak I thought I wasn't able to keep the intensity."
Djokovic was off for the victory breezing through the opener but Medvedev staged a stunning comeback in the second at 3-3 winning straight three sets to break the set.
He followed in the stead in the decider and surged ahead by taking a break for a 5-3 lead before breaking a point for the third time with a forehand return to Djokovic's serve.
He went to say, "Usually, I'll go bigger on my second serve when it's not working and Novak was just destroying me in the first set. At one moment, I said to myself why do a normal second serve if I'm going to lose the point. I started to win much more after that."
The victory will be Medvedev's first in four headcounts against Djokovic, who conceded to him the most ace he would in a three-set match in this season.
David Goffin is another Cincinnati final first-timer and he defeated Richard Gasquet in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to set up a final match against Medvedev.
