Aliko Dangote Redeems $50,000 Pledge To Nigerian Super Eagles
The Super Eagles are getting bathe in money with a $50,000 coming from Aliko Dangote, fulfilling a promise that he will reward the team for every goal scored in the semi-final of 2019 African Cup Of Nations in Egypt.
The pledge was meant to encourage the team to reach the final for the first time since 2013, unfortunately, Eagles were beaten 2-1 by Algeria but won the third-place match with a 1-0 win over Tunisia for a bronze medal.
Presenting the prize money was the Group Managing Director (GMD) of Dangote Group, Olakunle Alake, who handed a cheque of $50,000 to the team represented by its midfielder John Ogu, kit manager Enebi Achor and Chidi Ngoka at the NFF's office in Lagos, Nigeria.
"Business tycoon Aliko Dangote today in Lagos redeemed his pledge of $50,000 to the @NGSuperEagles for their one against Algeria in AFCON 2019 semi-final," the NFF wrote in a tweeted message on Wednesday, "Money was presented by Olakunle Alake, GMD of Dangote Group accompanied by Anthony Chiejina, Chief Corp. Comm. Officer."
The day before Mr. Dangote redeemed his pledge, another Lagos-based tycoon Femi Otedola, fulfilled his promise of $25,000 to the team for every goal scored in the semi-final. Aside from being business magnate, it is fair to state that both individuals - Otedola and Dangote - are well known to be philanthropists.
Speaking of Dangote, he owns the largest cement manufacturing company in Africa and currently building the biggest oil refinery in Africa in Lagos. In net-worth, the 62-year-old is estimated to have $10.6 billion - his net-worth peaked at $25 billion in 2014.
