Wimbledon 2019: Tennis Player Threatened To Bomb Club, Later Apologised


Fabio Fognini had an emotional meltdown for having to leave The Championship early following his defeat to American player Tennys Sandgren in the third round match on Saturday.

En route Fognini's elimination after losing in three sets 4-6, 6-7(12), 3-6, he was heard saying in his native language in the third set, "I wish a bomb would explode on this club."

There has not been any immediate action taken by the event organisers on utterance made by the player who was served two tournaments suspension plus a fine of over £70,000 for foul-mouthing a female umpire at the US Open in 2017.

Speaking at a press conference, the 33-year-old apologised for making sure a threatening remark during the match and blamed his wrongdoing on being "frustrated" with his performance against his opponent.

"If somebody feels offended. I say sorry," he said in Italia "Most of the time when you're on [the] court, you're frustrated. For sure I was not happy about my performance today...because I think I have a good chance to win."

During the match, Sandgren saved 5-in-7 break points faced against Fognini and served 13 aces winning 68 per cent of his first-serve points. He will meet in the round of 16 his compatriot Sam Querrey.
