Wimbledon 2019: Reilly Opelka Stuns Stan Wawrinka With Second Round Upset
American player Reilly Opelka staged a thrilling upset of Wimbledon veteran Stan Wawrinka in the second round match.
The three-time Grand Slam winner played through five sets 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 8-6 against the big-serving 21-year-old player who served 23 aces and won 21 per cent of his first-serve points.
Stan saved 10-12 break points faced during the match and committed 21 unforced errors in the last two sets against Opelka who won for the first time in his career will be appearing in the third round match at a Grand Slam.
"I think it was a tough match to lose, that's for sure," Wawrinka said afterwards "I had some chances. I start a little bit slow> I was hesitating a bit, not really moving well enough"
Opelka, who won his first tour-level title at New York Open in February, take a 1-0 lead in ATP FedEx series with the Swiss and will take on Canadian player Milos Raonic in next round match.
