Stuttgart Open: Matteo Berrettini Defeats Felix Auger-Aliassime To Win MercedesCup
Matteo Berrettini has been crowned the winner of the MercedesCup after outlasting Felix Auger-Aliassime in a hard-fought final match on Sunday.
The Canadian, 18, engaged the champion in a fierce contest for the title through a tiebreak in the decider but lost the bid for his career first title after the Italian won three straight match points to win in two sets 6-4 7-6 (11) after almost two hours of play.
Aliassime who was playing in his third ATP tour-level finals this season served 16 aces, but Berrettini was outstanding winning 93 per cent of his first-serve and faced no break point against the Lyon and Rio Open finalist.
"This match was unbelievable," Matteo admitted, "We had chances, a lot of set points for him, and match points for me, so it was a really tough one...I'm really happy the way I fought during the week."
Truly, Aliassime was in top form and upset world no. 5 Alexander Zevrev and Dustin Brown to reach the final - Milos Raonic retired in the semi-final against the NextGenATP star player.
