French Open: Dominic Thiem Sets Up Final Match Against Rafael Nadal After Novak Djokovic's Exit In Semi-finals
Dominic Thiem delivered a stunning performance against Novak Djokovic and stopped him on his bid for second Roland Garros on their return to court on Saturday following a match suspension on Friday due to rain interruption.
The Austrian who already had a 4-1 lead before the interruption was revamped for the last bit of the semi-finals against the world no. 1 who was a match from becoming the first player ever to claim all-four Gram Slam titles should he beat Rafael Nadal. Unfortunately, that did not happen for the top seed.
However, Djokovic quickly broke back and level the points 5-5 but Dominic fought back and curbed his aggression with a good combination of backhand and forehand shots and outlasted him by 6-2 3-6 7-5 5-7 7-5.
"Credit to him. He just played the right shots and put me out of the comfortable position in the court," says Djokovic afterwards.
Having won the match, Dominic takes a 2-1 lead in head-to-head at Roland Garros against Djokovic who leads him with 6-in-9 match wins in ATP FedEx series.
The final match is set up between Dominic and second seed Rafael Nadal on Court Philippe Chatrier on Sunday.
