French Open: Ashleigh Barty Wins Career First Gram Slam Title
Ashleigh Barty has won her career first Grand Slam title in Roland Garros, sweeping through the final match to beat Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets.
The Australian thrashed her Czech opponent by 6-1, 6-3 to become the first female player ever to win a title at the competition after Margaret Court in 1973.
"It is unbelievable, I'm a little speechless," said the first-time champion who was previously a cricketer "I'm incredibly proud of what I've been able to achieve."
In the semi-finals, Barty survived a scare from American player Amanda Anisimova and rallied from a set down to win in three sets by 6(4)-7, 6-3, 6-3 to clinch her spot in the final.
The 23-year-old ranking is set to leapfrog to second place when new ATP World standing will be announced on Monday.
