David Ortiz, Retired Baseball Player, Hospitalized For Gunshot To His Back In Dominican Republic
David Ortiz, a retired Boston Red Sox slugger has been shot in the back by a gunman in his native country Dominican Republic on Sunday.
The incident reportedly took place around 8:50 p.m at a restaurant, Dial Bar and Lounge, where the former baseball player is known to frequently patronize on weekends and chat up to friends and close associate.
According to the Dominican authorities, Ortiz was with a friend and a TV host Jhoel Lopez when the gunman came off a motorbike and shot at him from close range. Apparently, Lopez was also hit during the attack but in the leg.
Ortiz was rushed to the hospital where he is been treated for gunshot wound to his back. And for the attacker, he was apprehended and beaten by the locals until the police came for his arrest.
Reasons behind the attack is yet unresolved but the police spokesperson Frank Felix Duran said in a statement that, "We're not ruling out any scenario. What we can rule out is that that wasn't a robbery."
It is understood that Ortiz is responding to treatment as told by his father, Leo, who revealed when approached at the medical centre that his son was lucky the bullet did not hit any major organ.
