Despite that good performance from Verstappen, he dropped to fourth as a consequence for his unsafe from pit on Lap 12 and Sebastian Vettel and Valterri Bottas moved up to second and third respectively.
"I was fighting with the spirit of Niki [Lauda]. I know he'll be looking down taking his hat off. I was trying to make him proud," Hamilton said in tribute to the deceased who passed away last week Monday, aged 70.
In recall of strong contest faced from Verstappen and how he managed through, he said: "It was a bit of a late dive. I saw him last minute. He wasn't fully past. A light touch and move on."
