Madrid Open 2019: Novak Djokovic Battles Through Against Dominic Thiem To Reach Final
Novak Djokovic did not find it easy making it through to his 48th Masters final against Dominic Thiem in their semi-finals match in a bid for his third title in Madrid Open.
Thiem, who eliminated Roger Federer in the quarter-finals was knocked out in straght sets after tie-breaks 7-6(2), 7-6(4) as the world no. 1 reached his third Mutual Madrid Open final.
The Austrian eight matches winning streak got snapped by the Serb who have 6:2 head-to-head lead in ATP Fedex series with the world no. five.
"I never complain about [ATP Masters] 100 semi-finals," Thiem said afterwards "I beat three very good players and I lost to Djokovic. It was a good tournament and now I will enjoy the doubles."
Thiem seemed to set for the win but the world no. 1 but failed to convert break point and caused the game to enter into tiebreak at the opener and Djokovic forced him to commit unforced errors to win the opener.
In the second set, Djokovic broke back from 2-4 and forced the set into tiebreak as Thiem double faulted at 5-6 and clinched the victory as he hit wide a backhand return.
Having reached the final, Djokovic will face in either Rafael Nadal or Stefanos Tsitsipas in a bid for his third title in Madrid.
