Italian Open: Nick Kyrgios Retires In Second Round, Storms Out Of Court For Game Penalty
Nick Kyrgios walked out of the court and abruptly retired from the Internazionali BNLd'italia in his second round match against Casper Ruud.
Nick had fought through a tiebreak in the second after the Norwegian breezed through the opening set but it happened that the Aussie had an emotional meltdown when the judge served him a penalty in the third and stormed out of the court. The world no. 36th forfeited match at 3-6, 7-6(5), 1-2.
Ruud broke back to lead 1-2 in the third when he ranted at the referee and was given a penalty but he reacted clinching his racket and threw a chair on the court saying to the spectators "I'm done" before taking his leave.
The 24-year-old who defeated Daniil Medvedev in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the opening round, was served an ATP ban in 2014 for taking his leave after losing the opening set to Mischal Zevrev in Shanghai.
Earlier this week, Kyrgios openly trolled world no. 1 Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal during a podcast interview after beating Daniil.
In his statement during the interview, he described Djokovic "cringeworthy" and his Spaniard counterpart as a "super salty" player. However, he admitted that both players are "great" in the sport.
"I just feel like he has a sick obsession with wanting to be liked. He just wants to be like Roger," he lashed out at Djokovic "This whole celebration thing that he does after matches, it's like so cringeworthy. It's very cringeworthy."
He went further on his take on so-called "salty" Nadal saying, "He was a great player. But as soon as I beat him, it's just like, 'He has no respect for me, my fans and no respect to the game.'"
