Antoine Grhiezmann Confirms Leaving Atletico Madrid For Barcelona For £104 Million
Antoine Grhiezmann, in a tweeted message, has announced his intent to leave Atletico Madrid for La Liga champions Barcelona for £104 million (120 million euro) this summer.
The forward who joined Atletico from Real Sociedad has been strongly linked to Barcelona since last season but chose to commit himself to the club where he has 94 goals in 175 appearances.
It became imminent that the 28-year-old would leave Atletico after the club reportedly triggered his £104 million release clause following talks with the club s executive Miguel Angel Gil and head coach Diego Simeone on his move to Barcelona.
"After speaking with Cholo (Atletico manager Diego Simone), then with Miguel Angel and the people in the hierarchy of the club," the Frenchman said in a tweeted clip, "I wanted to talk to you - the fans who have always given me so much affection - to tell that you that I have made the decision to leave and to do other things, other challenges."
Nonetheless, it became apparent to Barcelona that it urgently needs to boost its attack after losing 4-0 to Liverpool at Anfield to be eliminated in the semi-finals of the Champions League - bear in mind that they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by AS Roma last season.
In the later part of the footage posted online, Griezmann added that "It has been not easy to take this path but it's what I feel, It's what I need. I want to thank you for all the affection you have given me during these five years where I have won my first trophies...Thanks to everyone from my heart. Hasta Luego."
