Udinese Calcio's William Troost-Ekong Says Playing For Nigeria National Team Is Best Career Decision
Dutch-born Udinese defender William Troost-Ekong praised his decision to be a Nigeria Super Eagles player instead of the Netherlands national team as the "best ever" in his football career.
Troost-Ekong made his World Cup debut in Russia 2018 and played in all the group stage matches before the Super Eagles were eliminated after losing 2-1 to Argentina.
During an interview with BBC Sport, the 25-year-old explained his reasons for switching allegiance to Nigeria - his paternal native country - a decision he believed has been remarkable in his career and an "honour" to be giving a chance.
"I think the decision to play for Nigeria has to be the best ever for me. We have some amazing talented players in Nigeria and to get a chance to play for a greaf country like ours is an honour and immense privilege," he said.
In August last year, Troost-Ekong, who started his career in Tottenham youth team, joined the Italian Serie A side on a four years deal from Turkish side Byrsaspor.
He also expressed his gratitude to his coaches and supporters who helped him reached his dreams of playing at the Rio 2016 Olympics and the World Cup in Russia.
"I've fulfilled some dreams by playing at the Olympics Games and on the biggest stage [World Cup] in Russia, now I look forward to living another dream by playing at tge Africa Cup of Nations."
