Barcelona Open: Dominic Thiem Eased Past Daniil Medvedev To Win Title
After stopping Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals, Dominic Thiem breezed past fifth seed Daniil Medvedev to win his title in Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Sunday.
Thiem started off slow but soon gained control over Medvedev and eased through with straight sets, 6-4 6-0 win over the Russian for his 13th career ATP Tour level title.
Thiem staged a comeback from 0-3 at the opener and won straight five games and sealed the set with a forehand shot. He entered the set more aggressive and neatly won claiming straight six game.
In fifteen years of Rafael Nadal dominance of the tournament, the Austrian will be the third player to win a title in Barcelona after Kei Nishikori and Fernando Verdasco.
"Only great players have won here. Rafa has won it 11 times and it means a lot that Muster won it twice. It's a big moment for me," said Thiem afterwards "A title like this always gives you a lot of confidence, so I'll be in a good mood going into Madrid."
