City came into the game with away goal advantage of 3-2 from their first tie, but it turned out that the German side was a shadow of themselves at Etihad Stadium in the second leg.
City's goal campaign went off when Sergio Aguero converted a penalty drawn by Bernardo Silva in 35th minutes. Minutes later, Gundogan lobbed a pass over to the Argentine and he brilliantly controlled and drilled ball through to the post amidst Schalke's defenders for City's second goal.
Schalke went three goal down in the first half as Leroy Sane wasted time on Zinchenko's pass and drilled low right footed shot home in 42nd minutes.
After the break, Schalke's goalkeeper Fahrmann couldn't stop Raheem Sterling from making it a fourth goal after Sane curled the ball over to him and Silva followed up with fifth goal in 71st minutes.
The embarrassing outing persisted with Schalke as Phil Foden rounded Fahrmann and drilled a left footed shot home in 78th minutes - his first in a Champions League match - and Gabriel Jesus completed the scoring with a right footed shot from inside the area.
The match ended as literally the biggest victory ever recorded in the competition since 2014 when Shakhtar Donetsk thrashed BATE Borisov at home by 7-0.
While Manchester City are through to the quarter-finals, Foden becomes the youngest player, 18, ever to score for City in the competition.
