BNP Paribas Open 2019: Philipp Kohlschreiber Ousts Novak Djokovic With Third Round Straight Sets Win
Top seed Novak Djokovic was shockingly eliminated by Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round match of the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday.
The five-time champion and world no. 1 lasted one hour and 38 minutes before conceding to Philipp in straight sets by 6-4, 6-4 for the second time in his tenth career ATP Fedex meetings with the German.
Speaking after the match, Philipp gladly said it was a special day for him to knocked the Serb out in the early stages of the tournament.
"I had a great strategy to play against him. I had two good wins," says world no. 39 recalling his match with Nick Kyrgios "So, everything came together. [It's] very special to beat the No. 1. Unfortunately the tournament is not over. I have to get back tomorrow with a great mind."
Philipp followed his stead at Roland Garros a decade ago when he knocked the Serb out of Roland Garros in three straight sets by 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on their second ATP Fedex meetings.
The German will meet in the next round, French veteran and Rotterdam Open defending champions Gael Monfils who thrashed Albert Ramos Vinolas in straight sets by 6-0, 6-3.
