NBA To Launch Basketball League Of 12 Teams In Africa
The NBA has unveiled plans to bring the game to the continent of Africa and wants to step up a league with 12 teams from countries in the continent.
As revealed by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, the leagueof 12 team would be called Basketball Africa League and will include countries like Nigeria, South Africa, Angola, Egypt, Rwanda, Kenya, Morroco and Senegal.
Adam said in a statement released on Saturday that: "The Basketball Africa is an important next step in our continued development of the game of basketball in Africa."
However, it was also revealed plans of conducting qualification tournaments that will include African basket team under a canopy later in the year and are working together with the International Basketball Federation to make this work.
"Combined with our other programs on the continent, we are committed to using basketball as an economic engine to create new opportunities in sports, media and technology across Africa," Adam added.
In retrospect, the game has from time feature players of African descent like former Houston Rockets (1984-2001) and Toron Raptors (2001-2002) player Akeem Olajuwon who won NBA finals back-to-back with Rockets (1994, 1995), voted NBA MVP in 1994 and twice NBA final MVP (1994, 1995).
