FA Cup Fifth Round: Manchester City Beat Newport 4-1 With Phil Foden Scoring Twice
Newport County made efforts to stay on in the competition, unfortunately that only lasted through the first half before Manchester City started stroking in goals to oust them out in fifth round.
After both sides went through a goalless first half, then Leroy Sane opened the scoring after the break, slamming a left footed shot from inside the area that caught Newport's Joe Day in the face and went off to land in the post.
Phil Foden drove in on the ball and smacked a shot home from indide the 18-yard box for City's second goal, after Danilo's shot from inside the box after a one-two ball with Gabriel Jesus caught the bar.
Newport forward Padraig Amond seized a chance from a poor challenge on aerial ball in the box by City's Otamendi and lobbed the ball over Ederson Moraes and scored his team's only goal in the match.
With a minute left to play, Foden again dribbled through into the box and smacked the ball into the post for City's third goal and Riyadh Mahrez completed the scoring with a fourth goal in added minutes.
"Well, it was a really tough game. They scored a goal - a stupid goal," says City manager Pep Guardiola after the match "Phil's goal helped the team to nog suffer at the end. A big compliment to all the guys who played today."
However, that was Newport first FA Cup fifth round appearnace in 70 years and also their first FA Cup match against Manchester City. In addition, they have never won a game against City in all their previous meetings.
